{MOM LOVE}

This year, I took some time to design some Mother's Day cards
and treat labels for everyone to show their Moms some love...
(+ good design)

With the help of my friend Jen at Jen CYK Photography, our little Mom Day project was featured on Hostess with the Mostess- an amazing party planning site! Click here to check it out! We were also featured on Paper Crave- another site definitely worth knowing! Click here to see their post!

For the free Mother's Day card, click here! And click here for the adorable treat tags and labels! & for DIY instructions on how to add fun details to these printables, click here!

I created these free printables to be super easy to make on your own- what's easier than black and white & cutting out straight lines!?
 Try it- you (+ your mom) will be so happy you did!

What to do with all the fun party decor that
took hours and hours to create...?
Donate it for a good cause!

Part of my duties as a room mom for my 5-year-old's kindergarten class is to help create a "basket" to be auctioned off at her school's biggest fundraising event of the year. All of the money raised goes directly back to her school, so I offered my help in creating an "Ice Cream Social Birthday Party Pack". I knew we needed to add something special to help it sell- like the ice cream cart I had created for my daughter's birthday party, but I knew cardboard wasn't going to work! Luckily, fellow room mom, Trista, signed her husband up for the job of re-creating the cart with wood- complete with casters! He did an amazing job and even added wooden ice cream cone detail on the front! Then, I took on the task of painting it, making sure the colors coordinated with the party printables! Keep an eye out for the finished version after the big event coming up on Saturday, April 27th!

The original version in this picture from Lulu's 3rd birthday party (click here for original post), was created with a large cardboard box, some cardboard cake circles for wheels, and a wrapping paper tube as a flagpole. I hot glued some crepe paper + printed signage to add color and to coordinate with the rest of the event. It was the perfect photo prop and the kids really enjoyed using it for pretend play, too!

{SPRING PROJECT}

CONTACT PAPER

I have a bit of a collection of contact paper these days. I seem to buy some every time I visit the dollar store! I've scored some fun retro prints (old, discontinued goodies that ended up there!) as well as some classic prints like faux bois!

It's such a great material- it's sticky enough to cling to furniture, paper, glass, and so many surfaces- yet it doesn't create a gooey mess if you want to peel it off and start over. Get out that old roll of contact paper you bought when you first moved in your home and try using it for something other than lining your drawers! Here are some ideas to get you started!

I PURCHASED THIS CREDENZA AT A GARAGE SALE FOR $20- IT'S THE PERFECT SHAPE SINCE IT'S VERY ANGULAR AND EASY TO APPLY THE CONTACT PAPER TO. IT PEELS RIGHT OFF (FOR LATER WHEN I GET BORED OF LOOKING AT IT!)

YOU MAY SEE A PIECE OF FURNITURE THAT YOU LIKE BUT MAYBE THE FINISH IS THRASHED OR IT HAS A HUGE SCRATCH- THIS IS THE PERFECT WAY TO COVER IT!

I CHOSE TO DO A SCALLOPED DESIGN ALONG THE SLIDING FRONT PANELS. THIS PIECE OF FURNITURE LIVES IN MY 3-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER'S BEDROOM AS HER BOOKSHELF! & I LOVE IT EVEN MORE NOW- SO WORTH THE $20 (well, plus the $3 on contact paper) DO IT!!!

I HAD FUN USING THE NEGATIVE SPACE (THE DARK WOOD GRAIN) AND HAD THAT BECOME PART OF THE OVERALL DESIGN.

FAUX BOIS CONTACT PAPER FOR PACKAGING- A GREAT WAY TO DECORATE A GIFT BOX!

invitations included play money to bring to the event for the kids to use to purchase their own ice cream.

{Ice Cream Social Party Details}
When thinking of a theme for my daughters' birthday parties, I always take what they love as inspiration. For my daughter Luella's 3rd birthday, I knew the party would be centered around food! She definitely loves to eat and her favorite food- like most kids- is anything sweet! But I realized that when served cake and ice cream, both of my daughters go for the ice cream first and hardly touch the cake (except for maybe licking the frosting). That's when I decided her birthday party would be all about ice cream! No cake necessary! I chose to hold the event at 2 pm so I got away with not having to arrange serving a meal for the guests. It also allowed me to invite some extra guests since I was saving a little bit on our budget. I created custom "ice cream shop" branding for the event and called it "Lulu a la mode". I had so much fun making oversized ice cream creations to make the day memorable for the guests- especially for the kids and my birthday girl!

FOOD- a variety of ice cream treats were served; all of which were pictured on the ice cream shop menu. Guests could order and purchase their items at the ice cream shop counter!
*ice cream sandwiches from Hans' Homemade Ice Cream & Deli
*Klondike Choco Tacos & Heath Ice Cream Bars
*6 flavors of ice cream- including sorbet
*"toppings bar" including 6 kinds of sprinkles & gummy cherries
*ice cream sundae "birthday cake" made of Rice Crispies Treats (no cake at this event!)
*ice cream floats- Root Beer or orange soda with vanilla ice cream, and Sprite + Hawaiian punch with rainbow sherbert- yum!
*there was also a table for some salty snacks- popcorn, Pirate Booty, and crackers- in case the guests were on sweet overload
*gummy cherries were packaged with custom "thank you" labels as a favor

ACTIVITIES- children earned play money for each of these activities and had to buy their own ice cream:
*Photo booth ice cream shop- Handmade ice cream cart prop along with ice cream-adorned aprons for the kids to dress up like an ice cream vendor. Perfect for ice cream social networking! :)
*"Cherry on the top" game (version of "pin-the-tail on the donkey")
*"Design your own flavor" ice cream scoop coloring activity using scented markers- scoop creations were stacked up on the wall to see how high they could reach!
*Build-a-cone Castle" children were given cake frosting and several types & colors of ice cream cones to create a castle.
*In addition to the activities, play ice cream treats & a cash register were set out for pretend play and for the kids to make use of their extra play money.

DECOR- Giant scoops of pink ice cream were scattered around the house and were "melting" on our furniture and light fixtures, and tons of chocolate syrup was "dripping" from windows and walls and tables. The floor was even covered with rainbow "sprinkles"!
*custom ice cream shop logos which included an illustration of the birthday girl's sweet smiling face. *custom signs, menus, ice cream cup labels, and play money.
*handmade giant scoops of ice cream made using paper lanterns covered in pink tissue paper, cotton ball "whipped cream", and a foam ball covered in red felt as the "cherry on top".
*handmade "chocolate syrup" was so simple- neon multi-colored pom poms were hot glued to dark brown felt that was cut to shape.
*"Sprinkles" (multi-colored neon pom poms) were scattered all around the pretend play area!
*handmade ice cream cart complete with custom signage!
*DIY balloon ice cream cones.
*cherry heart pillows
*ice cream sandwich soap
